Experimental Investigations of the Plasma Arc Cutting of AISI 1020 Carbon Steel Plate

Abstract

The current study presents the plasma cutting process of 2 mm thickness of AISI 1020 carbon steel. The experiment conducted by taking into the account the effect of two process parameters, including cutting current of 15 and 20 A with cutting speed in range of 500 - 4000 mm/min, on the kerf formation, microstructure and microhardness.The results showed that at low cutting current of 15 A the melting occurred at the workpiece surface without cutting action. Increase the current to 20 A led to full penetration of the workpiece material at low and high cutting speed, with kerf width between 1.26 mm and 1.1 mm for cutting speed of 500 mm/ min and 4000 mm/ min, respectively. The plasma arc cutting speed has a high impact on the heat-affected zone HAZ and microstructure development with coarse grains at the HAZ at low cutting speed of 500 mm/min and constant current of 20A, increase the plasma cutting speed led to decreasing the grain size. The microstructure of the HAZ exhibited a presence of perlite and ferrite with some martensite structure. The highest microhardness of the HAZ of 220.8 HV was found in the sample processed at 20 A current and high cutting speed of 4000 mm/ min. However, the minimum microhardness of the HAZ of 156.7 HV was found in the sample processed at 20 A current and low cutting speed of 500 mm/ min.

Evaluation the Efficiency of Various Types of Corrosion Inhibitors Used for Basrah Water Storage Tanks

Abstract

In this paper, the efficiency of six different types of corrosion inhibitors used in Basrah drinking water tanks was assessed using a potentiostatic test method. The mechanism of adsorption of silicate and phosphate inhibitors in AISI 316 stainless steel surfaces and the effects of different water components in inhibitors are discussed in detail. The values of corrosion rate obtained from the Potentiostatic test showed that the protection against corrosion in the presence of inhibitors is better compared to the case of absence of inhibitors. The results of the six types of corrosion inhibitors tested showed that the inhibitory efficacy is higher below the temperatures 45oC, but when raise the temperature above 45oC the inhibitory efficiency becomes to decrease. Also, the test results indicated that the corrosion inhibitor involves silicate products provided more inhibited efficiency compared to the phosphate inhibitor alone or used the combined silicate/phosphate corrosion inhibitor. The inspection of the surface of the tested samples using optical methods shows that the pitting corrosion is demonstrated on the specimen surfaces after testing with or without inhibitors.

Abstract

An important challenge confronted when using blanking to machine sheet metal is the treatment of the shearing force in demand for great strength and heavy stock. One of the methods used to decrease the force wanted is the increase of a punch shear angle. In this work, experiments were conducted to study the effect of shear angle for blank has a diameter (50 mm) on shear force of a low carbon steel sheet (AISI 1008). Low carbon steel is a very common material used in fabrication of sheet metal components, with thickness of (0.5 mm). Tools used in the blanking tests were one traditional flat end punch and four different bevel sheared rooftop punches, which rooftop punches were compared to. and it (0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°) a punches diameter (49.95 mm) by clearance (0.025mm) for each side , with a blanking speed (500mm/min). A special blanking die set is designed and manufactured and was a blank cut by a hydraulic press whose capacity (20 ton). The results showed that the blanking forces of (AISI 1008) low carbon steel metal could be decreased radically with best bevel punch geometry. Using (10°) shear angle at the punch end, the cutting forces decreased up to (90%) compared to the ones of the traditional flat end tool

Abstract

Super-hydrophobic is the tendency of a surface to spit out water droplets. Only a surface with high apparent contact angle (>1500), low contact angle hysteresis (<100), low sliding angle (<50), and strong Cassie model state stability is considered a super-hydrophobic surface. In an attempt to create highly hydrophobic synthetic surfaces suitable for a range of uses, attempts have been made to mimic the super-hydrophobicity found in natural materials (such as lotus leaves). Due to its wide range of applications including waterproof, anti-fog, anti-ice and anti-corrosion surface, the laser processing process achieved the use of process parameters which had a significant impact on the roughness factor. High roughness factor F. At constant values of p = 3 mW and ω = 10 μm, at scanning speeds of 6000 mm/s.

Abstract

One of the unique properties of laser heating applications is its powerful ability for precise pouring of energy on the needed regions in heat treatment applications. The rapid rise in temperature at the irradiated region produces a high temperature gradient, which contributes in phase metallurgical changes, inside the volume of the irradiated material. This article presents a comprehensive numerical work for a model based on experimentally laser heated AISI 1110 steel samples. The numerical investigation is based on the finite element method (FEM) taking in consideration the temperature dependent material properties to predict the temperature distribution within the irradiated material volume.  The finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out using the APDL scripting language (ANSYS Parametric Design Language) that is provided by the commercial code ANSYS. Infrared (IR) thermography technique was used to explore the workpiece surface and to validate the obtained results. The work takes into account the effect of different speeds of the laser beam and pulses overlap on the temperature pattern of the material surface and depth.

Abstract

The present work deals with direct diffusion bonding welding without interlayer of austenitic stainless steel type AISI 304L with Oxygen Free High Conductivity pure copper (OFHC) in vacuum atmosphere (1.5 *10-5 mbr.). The optimum bonding conditions are temperature of 650 ?C, duration time of 45 min. and the applied stress of 30 MPa, in order to secure a tight contact between the mating surfaces. The corrosion behavior of diffusion bonding joints in 3.5% Nacl is studied to evaluate the corrosion resistance of welding joints by using Potentiodynamic method. The observed microstructure of corroded specimen of optimum diffusion bonding joint shows that the corrosion current density has low value as compared with base materials used. During polarization, galvanic coupling is observed between two materials used. At passivity region, inverse polarity is occurred at 450mV. Therefore, passive stainless steel 304 L behaves as cathode respective to pure copper, the corrosion behavior of the diffusion bonding joint was mostly by copper side. The corrosion results indicate the presence of galvanic effect. The corrosion current density of copper, stainless steel 304L and bond joints condition were (3.66 µA/cm2, 1.62 µA/cm2 and 1.85µA/cm2) respectively. A SEM examination of corroded diffusion bonding joint indicates that the galvanic corrosion happened on copper side. The corrosion rate of bonding joint conditions was 0.85 mpy, which is less than 1%. This means that corrosion resistance of bond joint is more than excellent.

Abstract

In this research, experimental and analytical deep drawing of the several-stages design mold is produce hexagonal cup and also proved the influence of the thickness of the sheet on the allocation of strain and laminating in curvature of the cup area for all stages of the drawing. Three stages deep drawing mold was designed and constructed to carry out the experimental work required to produce a hexagonal cup of (28.25 mm by 24.5 mm) , (60 mm) high drawn from a circular flat sheet (80 mm diameter), made from low carbon steel (1006–AISI). Analysis program (ANSYS11.0) to perform the finite element method to accomplish the analytical side of the search. Three types of thickness sheet (tt°= 0.5, 0.7,1 mm) with constant radius of curvature of punch equal to (RRpp =4) mm, radius of curvature of die equal to (RRdd=8 mm)and radius of curvature of wall of die (RRcc= 4 mm) were used. From the experimental and analytical results of the three stages of drawing, it has been found that drawing load less than the more advanced stages of drawing operation on the wall of cup, maximum laminating take place at curvature of the cup area with sheet thickness equal to (tt°=0.5 mm) and maximum thickeningtake place at the at throat cup with sheet thickness equal to (tt°=1 mm), the maximum values of strains (radial, hoop, thickness andeffective)take place at throat cup with sheet thickness equal to (tt°=1 mm).

Abstract

In the present work the effect of Corrosion & Scale Inhibitor was evaluated by using of the commercial product (Kurita S2050) that mainly containing of (Na2HPO4) sodium phosphate as corrosion inhibitor and (C6H11NaO7) sodium glocunate as scale inhibitor & dispersant. The dosing rate of this chemical was controlled according to the treatment system depend mainly on the monitoring of LI & RI indexes for (30) days treatment in the cooling tower unit of Al-Dora Oil refinery-Baghdad. The corrosion rate and the corrosion inhibitors efficiency were calculated by measurement of weight loss in standard test coupon (AISI 1010). After 30 day of the Field Test, the result show that the treatment program performance was effective in the corrosion & scale inhibition through an acceptable corrosion rate less than 0.018 in gmd. Also the result of corrosion rate was analyzed statistically by using of (ANN) to formulate a prediction equation to corrosion rate identification.

Abstract

Desired mechanical properties like microstructure, micro hardness and wear resistance are the key parameters for which low carbon steel (AISI 1006) are widely selected. Surface heat treatment applied to improve these properties; traditionally surface heat treatments like induction hardening, in recent time’s laser surface hardening. In this work, thermochemical treatment (liquid nitriding) by using mixture from 61% NaCN, 15% K2CO3 and 24% KCL and followed by Nd:YAG laser surface treatment was done . The laser parameter were energy (0.89, 2, 4 and 9) J, spot diameter (0.790 ,0.33, 0.283 and 0.224) mm, pulses duration (1, 2.33, 4.47 and 9.87) ms with  fix wavelength 1604nm. Laser surface treatment cycle was melting the layer surface, holding and rapid cooling in air medium.  Optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to study the microstructures and cross-sectional of molted and heat affected zones respectively. The wear test was done to measure the wear rate by using pin -on-disk principles were satisfied. The result shown that increasing in laser energy effects to increase in the area of melted and heat affected zones of nitriding steel. Also increasing in laser energy led to increase micro hardness about 61%, while wear rate decrease about 40 % and increased depth of molted zone.
